Pakistan's Imran Khan and wife Reham Khan to divorce

Imran Khan married Reham Khan in January this year in a simple ceremony at his Islamabad home.

Pakistani opposition leader and former playboy cricketer Imran Khan is to divorce for a second time, ending his marriage to a TV journalist just ten months after they wed, his wife said Friday.

Imran Khan, 62, married 42-year-old Reham Khan, a former BBC weather host and a divorced mother of three, in January this year in a simple ceremony at his Islamabad home.

"We have decided to part ways and file for divorce," Reham Khan said in a brief statement on her Twitter account Friday.

"Yes I can confirm their divorce," Naeem ul Haque, Imran Khan's spokesman told AFP.

"They mutually agreed to divorce today. It's a painful and personal matter, so I won't be able to comment more or state any reason for it," Haque said.

Loved by millions across the cricket-obsessed nation for winning Pakistan its only World Cup in 1992, Khan's sporting prowess and rugged good looks also brought him international celebrity in a country lacking glamour.

He was considered his country's most eligible man until he suddenly announced his plans to marry shortly after launching a movement to topple the government in August 2014, which he called off in December after a Taleban attack on a school that killed 150 people.

Reham Khan, host of a local TV talk show, was widely criticised after she appeared at public meetings of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) party, with opponents accusing her of seeking to boost her own profile through her husband's fame.

She found particularly harsh reception in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, governed by PTI.

She also sparked controversy after it emerged that she had not actually attended a college where she claimed to be a student on her website.

There had been reports Imran Khan's family was unhappy with his choice of bride.

Imran Khan is the father of two sons from his previous marriage to British socialite Jemima Khan (nee Goldsmith).

Born in 1952 in Lahore into a comfortable family with origins in the Pashtun northwest, he was educated at Aitchison College, the Eton of Pakistan, boarding school in England, and then Oxford University.

He became one of the world's greatest ever all-rounders - a fearsome fast bowler and dangerous batsman - whose finest hour came at the 1992 World Cup, where at the age of 39 he led an inexperienced team to the title.

Off the pitch, he had a string of socialite girlfriends and frequented exclusive nightclubs in London until he married Jemima Goldsmith, the daughter of the French-British tycoon James, in 1995.

She converted to Islam and the couple moved in with his family in Lahore.

They divorced in 2004, allegedly over the difficulties Jemima faced in Pakistan, where she was hounded for her family's Jewish ancestry, and his obsession with politics.

Many of 27 dead in club fire in Bucharest still unidentified

Media reported that clubgoers initially thought the flames were part of the show and
immediately react.

Officials said most of the 27 people who died when a heavy metal band's pyrotechnical show sparked a deadly fire at a Bucharest nightclub have not been identified.

Raed Arafat, an emergency situations official, said on Saturday that 17 of the dead have not been identified. TV stations posted a number for people to call to find out about the tragedy, the deadliest in the country's history.

The deflagration killed 27 people and injured scores of the club's mostly youthful patrons. Some 146 remain hospitalized across the capital.

Arafat says the death toll could climb from the fire that ripped though a club, located in a basement in a building in downtown Bucharest, a city of three million people.

The government will meet later and propose three days of mourning.

Witnesses told Antena 3 TV that there were between 300 to 400 mostly young people at the club, housed in a former factory, and only one exit door when the metal band Goodbye to Gravity was performing and a pyrotechnical show went awry. The station reported that people panicked and rushed for the exit.

Digi 24 television station cited witnesses who said a spark on stage ignited some polystyrene decor.

Media reported that clubgoers initially thought the flames were part of the show and did not immediately react. Fire regulations can be lax in Bucharest clubs and restaurants.

An Associated Press photographer at the scene saw people wandering around outside the club clad in emergency blankets in an apparent state of confusion.

Upon hearing the news, people descended on the club looking for loved ones. Adding to their anxiety was the fact that many of the clubgoers were not carrying identity papers so victims could not immediately be identified.

"She's not answering the telephone and she's not saying anything," said a mother, dressed in a black leather jacket, crying in front of television cameras.

"We want information whether he's alive," said a visibly overcome woman, speaking about a family member.

Several major nightclub fires have been blamed on pyrotechnics igniting foam used for soundproofing, including The Station nightclub fire in the U.S. that killed 100 people in West Warwick, Rhode Island, in 2003 and the Kiss nightclub fire in Brazil, which killed 242 people in the university town of Santa Maria in 2013.

Raed Arafat, a government emergency situation official, said that people were treated for burns, smoke inhalation and lesions at hospitals around the capital. Twenty-five were reported in serious condition at the Municipal Hospital.

What is Halloween?

What is Halloween Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition for many Christians around the world. However despite this, its role in Christianity is widely debated, with some Christians distancing themselves from it entirely.

Earthquake of 7.7 magnitude strikes south Asia

A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude has shaken south Asia, with more than two minutes of sustained shaking felt in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, and buildings rattling in Afghanistan and India.

The quake was also felt in the Pakistani cities of Lahore, Faisalabad and the mountainous region of Chitral.

What you should do when an earthquake strikes

ISLAMABAD: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck major cities of Pakistan, including the northern areas on Monday, leaving several injured due to roof and building collapses. At least 12 casualties have been reported from various areas.

Six people were killed in Swat, while four people were killed in the Bajaur tribal region after the collapse of buildings in the area. A child was killed in Kallar Kahar.

A wall collapsed in Sargodha, killing one and injuring 10 people, while three are injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Tremors have been felt in major cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Quetta, Kohat and Malakand.

Rescue 1122 has been put on high alert in Punjab. The disaster response force is on standby and a code red has been imposed, Director General Rescue Punjab Retd Brig Dr Ashraf Zia said. Rescue 1122 Spokesman Jam Sajjad said there were no reports of any deaths in Lahore.

Communication services have been disrupted in Islamabad, where walls swayed back and forth and people poured out of office buildings in a panic, reciting verses from the Holy Quran. A building has also reportedly collapsed in Peshawar.
Citizens took to social media to post reports of the massive quake that lasted for up to one minute.

Tremors were also felt in Kabul and New Delhi.
The full extent of the damage and the number of possible casualties is not yet known.

7.7 on Richter scale

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in northeastern Afghanistan, the United States Geological Survey said.

Vineet Gahlot, the director of seismology at the Indian Meteorological Department, said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.7 and an epicentre deep in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Pakistan state TV reported the same magnitude.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department, however, said the magnitude of the earthquake was 8.1.

The quake was 196km deep and centred 82km southeast of Feyzabad in a remote area of Afghanistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range.

According to USGS, the epicentre is 67km from Chitral.

Rescue operation

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed all federal, civil, military and provincial agencies to declare an immediate alert and mobilise all resources to ensure the security of citizens of Pakistan. All agencies have been directed to move out with their resources.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has directed army personnel to reach out where required to help affected people without waiting for orders.

Pakistan and the region, along an active continental plate boundary, is often hit by earthquakes. In September 2013, a magnitude-7.7 quake struck Pakistan's Balochistan province, killing at least 376 people. In 2005, the country was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless.

Death for man in Dubai who set 'friends' on fire

A construction worker has been sentenced to death in absentia for killing a warehouse keeper by setting him afire. He was also accused of trying to kill another man in the same manner, who survived the arson attack.

The 32-year-old Pak national, who is identified as D.K., and is still at large, knew both the victims personally. The Court of First Instance has convicted D.K. of premeditated murder, premeditated attempted murder and arson in the incident reported on February 9.

A fellow Pakistani winch operator said in the investigation that he had seen the accused chatting and laughing with the victims shortly before the incident.

"There were no problems and they talked about funny incidents that usually occur at the workplace."

The accused then left the warehouse and came back after few minutes carrying a bucket.

However, the victims were taken aback when D.K. poured gasoline on them and the material inside the warehouse. The survivor of the incident said he felt the blanket he was covering himself got wet in seconds.

To their surprise, D.K. ignited a lighter, which put them, as well as the construction material belonging to a contracting company in Jebel Ali, on fire.

He said that he heard D.K. saying after setting the place on fire, "You all die inside' and then he left the place". The victim, who survived the attack, said that he did not know what was the motive behind D.K.'s gory act.

"Our relation was good and that was the same for the other victim. There were no problems".

He added that the blanket saved him from death while the other victim, who was all in flames, was screaming of his horrendous burns. He managed to kick open the warehouse's wooden door and jumped outside.

The warehouse guard rushed to put off the flames engulfing the first victim with a fire extinguisher no ne could get any closer to him.

Eventually, the guard put out the flames on him but of no use. The victim died shortly later.

The court's ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days.

Retail gold prices in Dubai edge down slightly

Spot gold drops 0.5% to $1,171.66 an ounce on Monday morning, while U.S. gold futures slides nearly 1%

Dubai: Gold was retailing slightly lower in Dubai on Monday compared to a day earlier, but prices were still higher than a week ago.

The price for 24-carat gold stood at Dh141 per gram as of 11:30am in Dubai, down only 50 fils from Sunday, but up nearly Dh2 from a week earlier. The price for 22K was pegged at Dh134, while 21K and 18K retailed at Dh128.25 and Dh111 per gram, respectively.

Spot gold dropped 0.5 per cent to $1,171.66 an ounce by 0639 GMT, while U.S. gold futures slid nearly one per cent, according to a Reuters report.

The majority of retail investors had earlier predicted that gold will continue to rally this week on lower expectations of an interest rate increase this year.
In a survey conducted by Kitco, 78 per cent of 288 retail investors said they are optimistic on the bullion’s performance this week, while only 16 per cent were bearish and 6 per cent were neutral.

Among market professionals, however, fewer (57 per cent) were betting on gold’s rally to continue, 29 per cent were bearish and 14 per cent were neutral.
Some analysts are not seeing any further price movements in favour of gold this week since the US Federal Reserve is not expected to hold any meeting or issue a statement that could impact the US dollar.

Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that many investors remain “lukewarm” to the precious metal “but following three major short-covering rallies since August, the selling appetite seems to be fading.”

With the broader macro environment starting to show some support for gold, Hansen said “the current price action still shows how investors remain unconvinced and that stronger evidence of an improved outlook is need in order to shift sentiment.”
“So the big question is now whether gold just like silver will be able to break its previous highs thereby helping to improve the technical outlook. Gold needs to break its August high at $1,171/oz in order for the higher lows seen since July to have any positive price impact.”

6-year-old boy on balance wheels run over by car in Abu Dhabi

Child's death prompts calls for use of balance wheels only in designated areas  ..
Abu Dhabi/Dubai: Abu Dhabi Police on Monday urged parents to ensure their children use smart balance wheels only in designated areas and use protective gear while doing so following the death of an Emirati child.
The victim, a six-year-old Emirati identified as S.A., was run over by a car on Monday in Abu Dhabi while using smart balance wheels, Gulf News has learnt.
The balance wheels, also known as a hoverboard, resemble a skateboard or a mini Segway without a handle and cost between Dh900 and Dh2,000.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said using smart balance wheels as a tool of entertainment in public areas, especially in roads and even service roads, may result in accidents.
Using smart balance wheels has become increasingly popular in the UAE in recent months, especially among the younger population who use it in indoors and in  public.
The battery-powered board moves according to the user’s weight distribution. To move forward, for example, the user only needs to lean forward. To slow down, stop or move backwards, the user has to lean back. The same principle applies when the user wants to turn left or right.
Col Al Ameri urged parents to make sure that their children only use their balance wheels in designated areas such as parks. Various malls in the capital and in Dubai have banned smart balance wheels.
Col Al Ameri also said that children must use protective gear such as helmets, knee, elbow and wrist pads to ensure maximum safety.
In Dubai, an Indian mother sought to warn other parents about keeping their children protected while using smart balance wheels following her son’s accident on Saturday.
Aisha, a businesswoman, did not intend to buy smart balance wheels for her 11-year-old son but gave in due to his insistence. She allowed him to try it out first in a shop to see how it worked.
“He took a right turn but the machine turned faster than he had anticipated so he fell on his right side,” Aisha told Gulf News.
Aisha said she is not blaming the machine itself but is urging parents to take the necessary precautions for their children should they decide to buy it for them.
“He has a soft tissue injury on his right forearm. He has had a sling since Saturday. Alhamdulillah he did not have a serious injury; no fractures or anything,” Aisha added.
Aisha said she took her son to a hospital in Al Garhoud where a nurse who tended to her son’s injury said they receive as many as 14 similar cases each day, including a child who had two broken ribs after falling from smart balance wheels. Gulf News could not verify this.
Another Dubai resident, Mohammad Khateeb, had an accident using smart balance wheels a month ago. Khateeb said he took the balance wheels to his office for work purposes but ended up in hospital hours later.
“When I stepped on it, my feet were not positioned correctly. So, the side where the right foot was, started turning right while the left side started turning in the other direction. I fell on my back and tried to break the fall using my hand. My hand was fractured and I was off work for three weeks,” the Jordanian who works in advertising said.
Khateeb agreed that users should ensure the safe use of these boards. He also emphasised that people should keep to their normal activities as physical activities such as walking are now being neglected by board users
