What is Halloween?
Halloween spans the line between autumn and winter, post
harvest, which signifies times of plenty and scarcity - proverbial life and
death.
The exact history of Halloween remains disputed, but it is
thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Samhain
was the Druidic lord of death). The pre-Christian Celts lived around 2000 years
ago in northern Europe, in what is now the UK, Ireland, and parts of northern
France. Celts saw the time as the end of harvest and the onset of winter, which
was considered a time of death. During Samhain, people would light bonfires and
wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts who had returned to Earth.
Long after the establishment of Christianity in what was
once Celtic land, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour
all saints and martyrs in the 8th Century. This was known as All Saints’ Day
and shared similar customs to Samhain.
The evening before All Saints’ Day was known as All Hallows’
Eve. Over time this became Halloween. By the 20th Century, Halloween became a
more material occasion and popular community-based activity which was
specifically aimed at children.
What is done In modern times, people dress up in costumes.
The original idea was to ward off evil spirits, but today it’s more for fun.
Costumes are generally of a spooky nature, with witches, vampires, skeletons,
and zombies being popular options.
Houses are decorated with ghoulish adornments, and a pumpkin
placed outside by the front door.
Young children are encouraged to play “trick or treat”.
What is trick or treat “Trick-or-treating” is an American
addition to the occasion. It is suggested that it dates back to the early All
Souls’ Day parades in England. The poor would beg for food and better-off
families would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their
promise to pray for the family’s dead relatives.
The idea filtered down to contemporary children, who would
go around houses asking for sweets or money. When someone opens the door, they
are given an option to provide a treat, or suffer a trick. Tricks are generally
light-hearted.
What are the pumpkins for The pumpkin is known as a
Jack-O-Lantern, and contrary to popular belief, it is not an American addition,
despite pumpkins being indigenous to the Americas. The Jack-O-Lantern actually
traces its lineage to Ireland, and the vegetable of choice was originally a
turnip.
According to Irish myth, a man called “Stingy Jack” invited
the Devil to have a drink with him. As his name implied, Stingy Jack didn’t
want to pay for the drinks, so he asked the Devil to turn himself into a coin
so that he could pay. The Devil obliged, but Jack chose to keep the coin and
put it into his pocket next to a silver cross. The cross prevented the Devil
from changing back.
Stingy Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition
that he would not bother him for a year and that, in the event of Jack’s death,
he would not claim his soul.
Jack eventually died, and because of his antics, God would
not allow him into Heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick that Jack had played
on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, also would not allow Jack
into Hell.
Instead, he sent Jack off into the night with only a burning
coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been
roaming the Earth with it ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly
figure as “Jack of the Lantern

Death for man in Dubai who set 'friends' on fire
A construction worker has been sentenced to death in absentia for killing a warehouse keeper by setting him afire. He was also accused of trying to kill another man in the same manner, who survived the arson attack.
The 32-year-old Pak national, who is identified as D.K., and is still at large, knew both the victims personally. The Court of First Instance has convicted D.K. of premeditated murder, premeditated attempted murder and arson in the incident reported on February 9.
A fellow Pakistani winch operator said in the investigation that he had seen the accused chatting and laughing with the victims shortly before the incident.
"There were no problems and they talked about funny incidents that usually occur at the workplace."
The accused then left the warehouse and came back after few minutes carrying a bucket.
However, the victims were taken aback when D.K. poured gasoline on them and the material inside the warehouse. The survivor of the incident said he felt the blanket he was covering himself got wet in seconds.
To their surprise, D.K. ignited a lighter, which put them, as well as the construction material belonging to a contracting company in Jebel Ali, on fire.
He said that he heard D.K. saying after setting the place on fire, "You all die inside' and then he left the place". The victim, who survived the attack, said that he did not know what was the motive behind D.K.'s gory act.
"Our relation was good and that was the same for the other victim. There were no problems".
He added that the blanket saved him from death while the other victim, who was all in flames, was screaming of his horrendous burns. He managed to kick open the warehouse's wooden door and jumped outside.
The warehouse guard rushed to put off the flames engulfing the first victim with a fire extinguisher no ne could get any closer to him.
Eventually, the guard put out the flames on him but of no use. The victim died shortly later.
The court's ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days.

6-year-old boy on balance wheels run over by car in Abu Dhabi
Child's death prompts calls for use of balance wheels only in designated areas ..
Abu Dhabi/Dubai: Abu Dhabi Police on Monday urged parents to ensure their children use smart balance wheels only in designated areas and use protective gear while doing so following the death of an Emirati child.
The victim, a six-year-old Emirati identified as S.A., was run over by a car on Monday in Abu Dhabi while using smart balance wheels, Gulf News has learnt.
The balance wheels, also known as a hoverboard, resemble a skateboard or a mini Segway without a handle and cost between Dh900 and Dh2,000.
Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said using smart balance wheels as a tool of entertainment in public areas, especially in roads and even service roads, may result in accidents.
Using smart balance wheels has become increasingly popular in the UAE in recent months, especially among the younger population who use it in indoors and in public.
The battery-powered board moves according to the user’s weight distribution. To move forward, for example, the user only needs to lean forward. To slow down, stop or move backwards, the user has to lean back. The same principle applies when the user wants to turn left or right.
Col Al Ameri urged parents to make sure that their children only use their balance wheels in designated areas such as parks. Various malls in the capital and in Dubai have banned smart balance wheels.
Col Al Ameri also said that children must use protective gear such as helmets, knee, elbow and wrist pads to ensure maximum safety.
In Dubai, an Indian mother sought to warn other parents about keeping their children protected while using smart balance wheels following her son’s accident on Saturday.
Aisha, a businesswoman, did not intend to buy smart balance wheels for her 11-year-old son but gave in due to his insistence. She allowed him to try it out first in a shop to see how it worked.
“He took a right turn but the machine turned faster than he had anticipated so he fell on his right side,” Aisha told Gulf News.
Aisha said she is not blaming the machine itself but is urging parents to take the necessary precautions for their children should they decide to buy it for them.
“He has a soft tissue injury on his right forearm. He has had a sling since Saturday. Alhamdulillah he did not have a serious injury; no fractures or anything,” Aisha added.
Aisha said she took her son to a hospital in Al Garhoud where a nurse who tended to her son’s injury said they receive as many as 14 similar cases each day, including a child who had two broken ribs after falling from smart balance wheels. Gulf News could not verify this.
Another Dubai resident, Mohammad Khateeb, had an accident using smart balance wheels a month ago. Khateeb said he took the balance wheels to his office for work purposes but ended up in hospital hours later.
“When I stepped on it, my feet were not positioned correctly. So, the side where the right foot was, started turning right while the left side started turning in the other direction. I fell on my back and tried to break the fall using my hand. My hand was fractured and I was off work for three weeks,” the Jordanian who works in advertising said.
Khateeb agreed that users should ensure the safe use of these boards. He also emphasised that people should keep to their normal activities as physical activities such as walking are now being neglected by board users
