Watch: 10 mistakes Dubai drivers should avoid in RTA road test

Do you dread the RTA road test? Here are the top 10 reasons why people fail their driving licence test in Dubai.

Driving your own car on Dubai's roads is everyone's dream, but getting a driving licence is often thought of as a nightmare.

This is mainly because people dread sitting next to an examiner, and this nervousness builds up right from the day they enrol for their first driving classes.

To add to this is the long list of failed attempts and thousands of dirhams that they hear about other people spending.

"Don't get nervous. Just because an examiner is sitting next to you, and two other drivers are sitting behind you, shouldn't make you nervous. Think of them as passengers," said Emirates Driving Institute in an email.

Here's a list of silly mistakes the institute shared with us:

1. In a bid to impress the examiner, the drivers take extra long time to adjust their mirrors and seats. This should not happen. These adjustments have to be swift. Delay only implies that the driver is not confident.

2. Don't stop unnecessarily. Drivers tend to stop their vehicles suddenly when they see a pedestrian, and turn on their hazard lights, often without checking their rear-view mirror. A car may be right behind them, and stopping suddenly may cause accidents. At times, it is okay not to stop for a pedestrian until he steps onto the road.

3. Two to three drivers take the test in a single car. When the turn of one driver finishes and it's time for the other driver, the second driver must wait until everyone in the back seat is settled. In a hurry, the new driver usually adjusts his seats, mirrors, seat belts, but fails to see if the previous driver has settled.

4. Be confident when changing lanes. This is one of the main reasons for failing a road test. When the examiner asks the driver to change lanes, the driver first has to check all his mirrors, and only when the road is clear should he complete the lane change. If the road is not clear, the driver must say so. Very often drivers rapidly increase or decrease speed for a lane change just to impress the examiner. This is dangerous.

5. The examiner's instructions supersede any other instructions. If you are on a lonely road with absolutely no cars around, or in a closed and empty parking lot, and the examiner asks you to do something which is otherwise prohibited, you may object. But if he insists, please follow the instructions. These could be minor things like exiting the closed parking lot from the opposite direction, or crossing a yellow line, or parking in front of a gate, or applying the emergency brake. Remember, the examiner is completely aware of the surroundings and safety is his top priority.

Bonus tip: Some drivers have the habit of pressing the accelerator when the car is in neutral. Don't do that. It's treated as an immediate fail.

Dubai Parks & Resorts announces delays, phased opening

Bollywood Parks, Legoland Water Park will now open in November, and Motiongate opening pushed to December

Dubai: Changes to the opening of Dubai Parks & Resorts in Jebel Ali were announced on Thursday with delays to Bollywood Parks, Legoland Water Park and Motiongate.

Legoland Dubai and the entertaining and dining district Riverland Dubai will open on the previously announced date of October 31. However, Bollywood Parks and Legoland Water Park will now open on November 15, while Motiongate opening has been pushed to December 16, a statement said on Thursday.

No reason was given for the delays from the owner that was officially rebranded to DXB Entertainments PJSC on Thursday.

“We are focused on delivering a destination which exceeds international standards on every level,” DXB Entertainments chief executive Raed Kajoor Al Nuaimi said in the statement. “We want to make sure we take the time to get everything just right.”

Dubai Parks and Resorts is set to be the largest multi-themed leisure and entertainment destination in the Middle East, with over 100 rides and attractions actions spread across 25 million square feet of land.

The rebranding of the company, which previously traded as Dubai Parks & Resorts PJSC, to DXB Entertainments PJSC, has been completed after shareholders approved the name change in June, a separate statement said.

The company is now listed as DXB Entertainments PJSC on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM), where its shares are traded, and now uses the symbol DXBE, the statement said, adding that its ISIN code remains unchanged.

The new name is a move to differentiate the wider corporate entity from the existing theme park destination in Jebel Ali, as per the company statement.

“We have a long term vision to redefine the leisure and entertainment industry in the region and, as DXB Entertainments, 

we have plans to expand our portfolio,” Al Nuaimi stated. “We believe there is great potential in the region for future growth of the entertainment industry and we want to be at the forefront, spearheading this expansion.

DXB Entertainments also announced that Vinit Shah has been appointed to the newly created position of chief business development and strategy officer. He previously served as chief destination marketing officer. Shah’s new position is part of the company’s strategy to develop its leisure offerings

Manny Pacquiao plans to return to the ring on November 5

"He would train in the Philippines and leave on the 16th to come to the U.S., train for two weeks and then come to Vegas," Arum said. "The only issue is getting an arena for the fight."

Arum said he is talking with MGM Resorts about an arena to host the fight. He had reserved the Mandalay Bay arena for Oct. 15, but Pacquaio can't leave his Senate duties that early.

The fight also could be at the UNLV campus arena, he said, though UNLV would have to move a scheduled basketball exhibition from the date.

There were reports that Pacquiao might fight Adrien Broner, but Arum said he wanted the same money as Pacquiao, which was a non-starter. Another possible opponent would be Jesse Vargas, who fights for Top Rank, and holds a piece of the welterweight title.

Pacquiao was off for nearly a year after losing in May 2015 to Floyd Mayweather Jr., healing from a shoulder injury. But he seemed reinvigorated after beating Bradley in April in a performance that got good reviews from most, including trainer Freddie Roach.

"When I see Manny Pacquiao like that, this is the best Manny Pacquiao," Roach said after the fight. "He hasn't missed a beat. I would like to see him fight again."

Thieves get Taiwan cash machines to churn out $2 mn

More than 700 other cash machines of the same type operated by six other banks have also been shut down.

Thieves suspected of installing a computer programme that got cash machines in Taiwan to churn out more than $2 million were being hunted by police on Tuesday, officials said.

The masked robbers ransacked more than 30 ATMs at the Taipei-based First Commercial Bank, walking away "with bags packed with cash", the bank said in a statement.

It suggested that a malware programme may have been installed on the ATMs, adding that the suspects stole the money without having to operate the machines directly.

Surveillance images showed "two men wearing face masks and hats walking away with bags packed with cash directly withdrawn from ATMs", First Commercial said in the statement.

At least two suspects were involved - one Russian man, and another foreign suspect whose nationality remains unknown, according to Taipei police.

"It is still not clear how the suspects stole such a large amount of money from the ATMs. My understanding is this is the first time such a criminal method has been discovered here," an officer told AFP.

It took the duo five to 10 minutes to steal money from each of the 34 ATMs over the weekend, the bank said, adding that the theft spanned machines at 20 branches.

It said more than 400 of its ATMs of the same type had been shut down following the heist, which cost the bank Tw$70 million ($2.2 million).

Police said the Russian suspect escaped Taiwan on Sunday, adding that they had sought assistance from Interpol.

"ATM crimes were not uncommon, most of them using fake cards or cheating people out of their money using their debit or credit cards on ATMs," the officer said.
