A look at the life and times of late Sheikh Rashid bin
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
The Dubai Ruler’s Court yesterday announced the death of
Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who succumbed to a heart
attack.
Following the funeral
prayer after Maghreb prayers at Zabeel Mosque yesterday, Sheikh Rashid was laid
to rest at Umm Hurair cemetery, located at Al Fahidi area, in Bur Dubai.
Sheikh Rashid was the
eldest son of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
A three-day official mourning has been declared across the
UAE following the death of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Flags will remain at
half-mast during the three-day mourning period.
Father, the Teacher
The late Sheikh Rashid learned from his father His Highness
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the
UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the skills to take the right decision. His father
planted in him the characteristics which should be of a leader.
Being close to his father had a great influence on the
character of late Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed.

Passion for Philanthrophy
Along with his official responsibilities, the humanitarian
work held great interest for late Sheikh Rashid. He made many philanthropic
contributions.
He was very keen on personal involvement in many activities
and key humanitarian initiatives, notably the Dubai Cares initiative. He
attached great importance to the noble objectives aimed at helping
disadvantaged communities in the world to keep up with progress by providing
educational opportunities for children.
World Sports Personality
Late Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed had a key role in
strengthening the sports world.
National Olympic Committe Chairman
He chaired the National Olympic Committee during from 2008
to 2012.
Before that, he co-founded the Dubai Cultural Sports Club in
Al Aweer where he chaired the club till he delivered it to his brother Sheikh
Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, head of the
National Olympic
Committee in February 2005.
The sports contributions of Sheikh Rashid were not only was
not confined by his official posts in local sports, but extended to areas of
global competition, where he participated in some of the significant
competitions which raised the UAE flag high with a series of accomplishments.
Endurance Champion
Late Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed had a passion for sports,
especially in endurance races, where he mostly took part alongside his father,
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and his brother Sheikh
Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
At the international level, Late Sheikh Rashid won many
important victories and titles, most notably the Gold Medal of the endurance
race in the Asian Games (December 2006) in addition to many local and regional
